Health Design 2018: Service design for a personalized patient experience

The second annual Health Design – jointly organized by Northbay, Healthtech Finland, Aalto University and HUS – was held on the 29th of November 2018 at Aalto University Learning Center. The event showcased personalized medical technologies, healthcare service design and digital health, with focus on individual patient experience. The program was packed with innovative solutions, a few of which are highlighted below.

CEO, co-founder Visa Sippola

Hospitals are fruitful environments for medical health tech startups. Visa Sippola from Surgify presented the achievements and challenges on the path towards successful medical innovations. Surgify has been developing solutions for safer bone surgeries since 2015.

According to Sippola, the key characteristics for collaboration between clinicians and medical startups are:

  • Including a medical professional in the service design team
  • Designing a product that matches the market
  • Entering global markets early and network as much as possible

The Care Lab
Co-founder Lekshmy Parameswaran

Keynote speaker Lekshmy Parameswaran from The Care Lab presented exciting projects on global service design solutions to improve the quality of life for vulnerable audiences, including mothers, pediatric patients and the elderly. In particular, Parameswaran highlighted the importance of human-centered design practices.

The Care Lab has identified 7 Intentions that guide their design projects and practices and together form the ‘Landscape of Care’:

  • Building caring environments and organizations
  • Empowering a new breed of care professionals
  • Designing care that fits into people’s lives
  • Designing care together
  • Normalizing care conversations
  • Engaging patients in their care
  • Breaking societal taboos around care

Oura ring combines Scandinavian design with wearing comfort. Oura’s mission is to empower people to own their potential by helping people to improve their sleep.

The three main principles of Oura’s design process are:

  • Iterating fast to improve product development
  • Being passionate about design

HUS Virtual Hospital
Development manager Timo Makkonen

HUS Virtual Hospital project develops patient-oriented digital healthcare services in collaboration with university hospital districts. The main outcome of the project is Terveyskylä.fi (Health Village), an information and support platform for patients and medical professionals.

The key lessons learned from designing digital services – Case Virtual Hospital:

  • The user interface should be “familiar with” the existing systems
  • The new product must fit to the existing processes at hospital
  • Try to find collaborators from clinics for both validation and roll-out

Helsinki Service Center

Helsinki Service Center designs virtual home nursing solutions. ‘At Home Concept’ is an internationally acknowledged project combining cutting-edge technology and wide liaison network to service design know-how.

Virtual care in Helsinki by numbers:

  • Over 750+ home care clients utilizing virtual care
  • Over 23,000+ monthly remote visits to the home care clients of the city of Helsinki
  • Virtual care is over 85% more cost-efficient compared to traditional on-site visits

Health Design Pitching Competition Finals

Health Design 2018 culminated in a pitching competition with a cash prize of 20 000 €. The finalists of the pitching competition were BrainCare, XFold Imaging, Osgenic, Adamant Health and MoMic.

BrainCare won the contest with their solution for the long-term monitoring of epilepsy patients. Their implant technology UltimateEEG™ is an intelligent solution for smarter diagnostics and treatment planning for patients with epilepsy. BrainCare’s SOENIA™ Epilepsy Diary is the world’s first epilepsy application for seizure follow-up with a medical device rating.

The next Health Design will be organized in November 2019.
